Who Benefits from Subject Tutoring?

My tutoring services in Burlingame, San Mateo, and Hillsborough help a wide range of students:

Catching Up & Filling Gaps

If your child is struggling to keep up with classwork, failing tests, or expressing frustration, tutoring can identify gaps and rebuild foundations.

From Good to Great

Getting Bs but want As? Working hard but not seeing results? Tutoring can take good students to great by refining their understanding and study approach.

Transitioning to Harder Material

Moving from elementary to middle school, or middle school to high school? Tutoring eases the transition by building skills before demands increase.

Students with Learning Differences

Whether your child has ADHD, dyslexia, or other learning challenges, I adapt instruction to work with their brain, not against it.

Preparing for Exams

Upcoming final exams, midterms, or placement tests? Intensive review sessions help students feel prepared and confident.

Building Study Skills

For students who struggle with organization, time management, or knowing how to study effectively—tutoring teaches these crucial skills alongside content.

My Tutoring Approach: Foundation First

Most tutors help students get through tonight’s homework. I do something different—I identify and fill the gaps that are causing the struggle in the first place.

The Knowledge Tree Philosophy

Knowledge is like a tree: without a strong trunk, the branches can’t thrive. Before diving into advanced topics, I diagnose where your child is coming from. What foundational concepts are missing? What do they already understand? What gaps need to be filled before new material will stick?

This means I don’t just explain the current assignment and move on. I build the conceptual foundation students need so they can tackle similar problems independently. The goal isn’t dependence on a tutor—it’s developing the understanding and confidence to succeed on their own.

What Makes My Tutoring Different

Diagnostic, Not Just Remedial

I identify root causes first, then build the foundation—not just surface-level fixes.

Conceptual Understanding Over Memorization

Students learn WHY formulas work, so they can apply knowledge to new situations.

Building Independence

I teach problem-solving strategies so students become self-sufficient learners.

Personalized to Learning Style

Every brain learns differently—I adapt to visual, hands-on, or verbal approaches.

Confidence Building

Understanding WHY they struggled transforms mindset and boosts academic confidence.

Integrated Study Skills

I weave in study strategies, organizational techniques, and executive function support—because knowing the material isn’t enough if you can’t manage your work.

What Parents & Students Say

My daughter was failing algebra and we were desperate. Rei didn’t just help her pass—she actually helped her understand and even enjoy math. She went from a D to a B+ in one semester. More importantly, she believes in herself again.

Frequently Asked Questions

How is your tutoring different from homework help or quick-fix tutoring? +
Many tutors help students complete tonight’s assignment and call it a day. I diagnose underlying gaps in understanding, teach concepts from the foundation up, and build independent problem-solving skills. The goal is lasting understanding, not just finishing homework.
Do you only tutor struggling students, or can you help students who want to excel? +
Both! I work with students across the full spectrum—from those who are behind and need to catch up, to high-achievers who want to deepen their understanding and get ahead. My approach adapts to meet each student where they are.
How often should my child meet with you? +
Most students benefit from 1-2 sessions per week. Students who are significantly behind might need more frequent sessions initially, while students maintaining good grades might meet weekly or bi-weekly. We’ll discuss the best schedule during your consultation.
Where do tutoring sessions take place? +
I offer both in-person tutoring (at your home, a library, or another convenient location in Burlingame, San Mateo, or Hillsborough) and online tutoring via Zoom. Many families find online tutoring just as effective and more convenient for scheduling.
Can you help with multiple subjects? +
Absolutely! I tutor all core subjects from elementary through high school. Many students work with me on multiple subjects, which allows me to see patterns in their learning and provide more integrated support.
How long does tutoring take to show results? +
Many students see improvements within 4-6 weeks of consistent sessions—better test scores, increased confidence, more efficient homework completion. However, rebuilding foundational gaps takes time. Long-term tutoring (a semester or more) typically produces the most dramatic and lasting results.
Do you offer test prep (SAT, ACT, AP exams)? +
While my primary focus is subject mastery and skill-building, I can incorporate test prep strategies into our sessions. If your student needs intensive, specialized test prep, I can recommend resources or adjust our approach to include targeted practice.
